Dental Sealants for Children

A dental sealant is a thin, plastic material that's applied to the inside of the chewing surfaces in the back teeth. They are placed on top of the teeth and hardened using a light-curing technique. Dental sealants are designed to protect the teeth from decay, and can often deter other types of dental problems such as chipping and developing plaque.

The most common areas for sealants include incisors and molars. They make sure each tooth is protected against cavities by preventing them from developing at the gum line. This is a preventive measure done by our children’s dentists to avoid more complicated procedures such as root canal treatment or extraction.

Steps on How to Apply Dental Sealants

Dental sealants should only be applied by licensed Adelaide children’s dentists to make sure the correct process is followed. First, the tooth is prepared by cleaning the surface and sides. After which, our dental professional can now apply the sealant on top of the tooth, making sure to cover all fissures and chipped parts. This is followed by drying in 30-45 seconds using ultraviolet light.

Applying sealants can only take about 10-30 minutes, but it can last for up to 10 years if well taken care of. That’s why it’s important to visit your child’s dentist regularly to make sure your teeth and all other dental materials used on them are checked and maintained properly.
